Mini donuts aren't going anywhere. Neither are cotton candy, deep-fried pickles or caramel apples.
Midway food—in all its greasy, salty and sweet glory—is an essential element to the summer fair experience. And Winnipeg's Red River Exhibition doesn't monkey with tradition.
But the Ex is adding some new traditions to the mix. The Expressway, a tented area on the fairgrounds, is loaded with vendors selling healthier foods including wraps, sandwiches, salads and smoothies. The Ex introduced The Expressway in 2013 but is adding more vendors in 2014, says CEO Garth Rogerson.
"There is no shortage of food options," he says.
Indeed, about 90 food purveyors will be selling their fare on the midway. An additional 15 will be inside The Expressway. Winnipeg food trucks may also be on site too.
Gluten-free food and a wide range of ethnic cuisine including Portuguese, African, Greek and Thai are also on the midway menu too.
As Rogerson says: "We want to expand the experience."
