Baconfest 2012: Everything is Better With Bacon
Everything is better with bacon. That's the rallying cry for this year's edition of Baconfest, to be held November 22 in Winnipeg.
A wise man once said, “Porkchops and bacon, my two favourite animals.”
So maybe the man wasn't so wise but cartoon buffoon Homer Simpson knew a great thing when he tasted it.
Salty, hickory-smoked and yes, greasy, artery-clogging bacon isn't good for you but dang it sure makes pretty much everything taste better.
On November 22, like-minded Winnipeggers will join together in a celebration of one of the culinary world's greatest creations.
Baconfest 2012 is an orgy of bacon bites, dishes and desserts all made by some of Winnipeg's top chefs.
The second annual event will be held Thursday, November 22 inside the atrium at the University of Winnipeg's Richardson College (599 Portage Avenue). Diversity Foods' (Elements Restaurant) executive chef Ben Kramer is set to bring forth his best bacon creations, among other notable kitchen magicians.
Last year's event, Winnipeg's first Baconfest, raised $93,000 for the United Way. Radio personality Ace Burpee delivered the event last minute in late 2011 with the help of Kramer and chef Alexander Svenne at Bistro 7 1/4 and 10 other local chefs.
FYI, Svenne is the brains behind seared scallops with bacon jam, an incredible appetizer he serves at his South Osborne hot spot. He's sure to deliver something divine at Baconfest.
Tickets to baconfest are limited and cost $100 each. Pick one up at 103.1 Virgin Radio Office (3rd floor, 177 Lombard Avenue.), Bistro 7 1/4 (725 Osborne Street) and Cakeology (85 Arthur Street). The bacon blast runs from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
This year's participating restaurants include Bistro 7 1/4, Elements, The Tallest Poppy, Cakeology, Deseo Bistro, Brooklynn's Bistro, Jonnie's Sticky Buns, Hermanos, Segovia, Half Pints Brewing Co. and The Grove.
